The Global Planning Educators Interest Group (http://www.gpeig.org/) Nominations Committee is making a call for nominations for GPEIG co-chair. The co-chair is a two-year position and would start at the ACSP meeting this fall in Washington, DC. As we agreed in our meeting in Chicago last summer, we would do our election process via the Internet prior to our meeting this fall.

Please send us the name and contact information for people who you think would be candidates for the GPEIG co-chair. Self-nominations are also encouraged. We would also like a brief paragraph about why you think the person or you would be a good candidate for co-chair and ideas for moving the group forward.

Please send your nominations by May 10, 2009 to ruth.yabes@asu.edu AND esweet1@illinois.edu.

2008 Gill-Chin Lim Award for the Best Dissertation

Dr. Georgeta Vidican, a graduate of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the winner of the 2008 Gill-Chin Lim Award for the Best Dissertation on International Planning. Her dissertation entitled “Institutional arrangements and land reallocation during transition: A regional analysis of small farms in Romania” challenges the conventional wisdom and the Washington consensus on development policies. She presents some fascinating findings with implications far larger than the study of agriculture in post-socialist transition. Dr.Annette Kim chaired Georgeta’s dissertation committee.

Dr. Sanjeev Vidyarthi, a graduate of Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor is recognized with an Honorable Mention for the 2008 Lim award. His dissertation entitled “Inappropriate appropriations of planning ideas: Informalizing the formal and Globalizing the Local\” provides a critical theoretical analysis of how Perry’s American concept of “neighborhood” unit is appropriated into an Indian city (Jaipur) by adapting the concept to local conditions. He presents a nuanced analysis of how politics, power, culture, and space are intertwined in the adoption (or subversion) of an alien planning concept. Drs. Aseem Inam and Gavin Shatkin co-chaired Sanjeev’s dissertation committee.

The Gill-Chin Lim Award for the Best Dissertation on International Planning is an award established by the ACSP Global Planners Educators Interest Group (GPEIG). The award recognizes superior scholarship in a doctoral dissertation completed by a student enrolled in an ACSP-member school. The committee members for deciding the winners for 2008 were: Diane Davis (Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Benjamin Kohl (Associate Professor, Temple University), and Sukumar Ganapati (Assistant Professor, Florida International University).

Call for Papers: ‘Practicing the Internationalization of Higher Education’

2009 Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting
Las Vegas, USA
22nd-27th March 2009
Announcement below copied on Dec. 16, 2008 from this site:
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/gawc/aag2009b.html

Over the past two decades, practices of internationalization in higher education have become a priority for many individuals, institutions and governments, and they also have considerably diversified (Knight 2003; Teichler 2004). In the early 1990s, the historically significant mobility of students and academic staff gained new momentum as part of recent globalization processes, while conversations about the internationalization of higher education focussed on two main areas, namely academic mobility of students and staff and curriculum development (OECD 1996). Since that time, the establishment of international university networks, transnational academic programs and branch campuses abroad has contributed to close ties between academic institutions in different parts of the world and promoted the emergence of new global educational hubs’ in places such as India, China and Singapore (Olds 2007; Hoyler and Jns 2008). Building on a growing interest in the transnational spaces of higher education and the formation of the global knowledge economy (Waters 2006; Hanson Thiem 2008; Olds and Robertson 2008), this session aims to critically interrogate strategies and practices of academic networking across national boundaries, whether these elucidate historical or recent developments.

Papers might focus on the international dimension of:
* Academic mobility of students and staff;
* Research collaborations;
* Curriculum development, joint academic programs, twinning programs and commercial export/import of education programs;
* Branch campuses;
* Development projects;
* University associations and networks.

If you are interested in participating in this session, please send title and abstract (of no more than 250 words) to Heike Jns (H.Jons@lboro.ac.uk) by 9th October 2008 at the latest. The AAG abstract specifications can be found at http://www.aag.org/annualmeetings/2009/papers.htm#abstracts.
