Bio/Research Summary:

Vicente del Rio, is a professor at the City and Regional Planning Department where he teaches urban design at the bachelors´ and masters´ programs. Native of Brazil, he holds a degree in architecture and urbanism from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1978), a graduate degree in planning (State University of Rio, 1979), a master’s in urban design (Oxford Polytechnic, 1981) and a PhD from the University of São Paulo (1990). Previously to joining Cal Poly in 2001 he taught at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro for 23 years, where he was full professor and served as graduate coordinator and deputy director. He was a visiting senior scholar at the Metro Center, Johns Hopkins University (1984), and at the Center for Urban Design, University of Cincinnati (1992). His research interests are in environmental-behavior design, infilling and revitalization, city marketing, and international planning. He published five books in Brazil and participated in various planning and urban design projects. He has co-edited and co-authored the book “Contemporary Urbanism in Brazil: Beyond Brasilia” (University Press of Florida, 2008).
