Bio/Research Summary:
Dory Reeves is Professor of Planning at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She is a chartered town planner from the UK and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Associate of the New Zealand Planning Institute (pending). She has worked in planning and associated areas since 1981 starting off in the public sector at metropolitan level in the UK; moving to higher education in 1994 (visiting Professor at Queens University Belfast 2000-2003) and from 2003-2008 worked for Reeves Associates. Her professional practice experience has involved citywide policy planning and public involvement in the development plan process.
Her teaching has mirrored this experience and research has been directed towards mainstreaming equality into planning and equality impact assessments, developing students’ public involvement skills, planning management and creative solution finding. As an Associate of the Creative University Programme she has been involved in the development of creative approaches to teaching and learning. She has written extensively and in 2005 wrote Planning for Diversity published by Routledge and co-authored the Good Practice Note Gender and Spatial Planning published by the RTPI in 2007.
Dory has played an active role in the professional planning institute the Royal Town Planning Institute, based in the UK and is an Associate of the New Zealand Planning Institute. She was involved in the planning institute at regional and national level in planning aid, environmental education and equal opportunities. She latterly chaired the Education and Life Long Learning Committee.
Recent research projects have included major evaluations of the Section 75 equality legislation in Northern Ireland carried out for the Equality Commission in Northern Ireland. Ongoing research includes surveying diversity issues in the planning profession and working with the UN Habitat Safer Cities Programme and Gender Mainstreaming Unit to prepare for the Nanjing Conference in November 2008, looking at planning’s role in tackling violence against women in particular in our cities.
